Chapter 275: Treachery!
"Treachery! Treachery!" Verdrak bellowed like a mad man, his eyes swollen red. "I said it, didn’t I?! He has betrayed the world and has brought Demons from the Villainess to murder us all! Treachery!"
All eyes looked down at the Demons who were supposed to murder them all. At first, they’d all carried wide eyes and tightened shoulders, gripping onto the council table or half-ready to flee despite the Grace Wall.
But their expressions now were calmer, some relieved, others confused, with slight-shame for the way they had reacted painted all over their features.
They were no longer scared of the supposed Demons because these Demons were dead.
"Council Member Verdrak," Lancet spoke with a very patronizing tone. "I don’t know what you’re saying but you can clearly see that these Demons are dead."
Heads turn in slow motion to the overzealous, angry old man who was looking more ridiculous by the second.
Verdrak peered at the slumped, lifeless bodies of the Demons. Realizing his mistake, he anxiously adjusted his council garment and cleared his throat.
"I see that now," he replied tentatively. "You should be careful. You can not just summon Demons, dead or alive, into a revered place as the Kingdom Council Hall."
Obel rubbed the length of his nose, frustrated by his friend’s lack of constraint. If it wasn’t because of his position of Council Lord, Verdrak would have been long voted out from the table.
He lifted his chin up after and focused his attention on Lancet Leogardt, glancing at the dead red monsters on the floor in front of him, then glancing up at the young Summoner and his dark female Summon, who... also was a Summoner.
"Despite his excessive zeal, Council Verdrak is not completely incorrect," he told Lancet. "You cannot just abruptly summon Demons inside this place."
Thor mumbled for only the women to hear. "But you can make deals with them."
Lancet heard, fought the smile, and replied. "I did give a warning first, Council Lord."
"No warning could have prepared us for a Demon, Summoner Lancet! You should have been more direct."
Lancet fell silent. Astensia beside him, narrowed her eyes, struggling to contain her remark.
"Very well. I apologize then." Lancet raised his hands slightly in retreat. "Can I carry on now?" He gave the King first and then Obel a pointed look.
Obel grunted. He raised his hand over the time and with a spill of light, recorded everything that had occured. Then to Lancet he said, "Carry on. Explain why you have brought dead Demons into the Kingdom Council Hall."
"Surely they’re the Demons you killed in Deathrock," Council Ressis, elderly but beautiful, asked. "This particular one looks eerie, like it was tortured."
Spectra smiled, pleased at another’s admiration of her work.
"Yes they are," Lancet replied. "But look deeper. Don’t you see? They’re not just any ordinary Demons" He pointed down at them while looking straight in Obel’s eyes like a teacher educating uninformed students. "They’re Demon Scouts!"
The Council Hall lit up with gasps once again. The expressions of the Members turned gravely serious as they began to discuss internally once again. Obel’s eyebrows were so squeezed they were brushing against each other, realizing the weight of Lancet’s words.
The Sovereigns weren’t any less shocked. More intrigued though. King Odesto who was getting bored of it all, only interested with the presence of the Demoness, had now sat up and his white-eyes were glittering with interest.
Queens Liu Xiu and Avanke looked awestruck. Ronald was laughing and singing to himself "War War. We’re truly going to wage war!" Romsgard leaned closer to the screen, peering at the dead Demons severely.
No one said any audible words for a moment until Obel who finished a conversation with Councils Verdrak — enraged and doubtful as expected — and Ressis who offered the opposite advice from what one would expect Verdrak to give.
Obel turned his focus to the Council again, but had something to say first. "Before we carry on," he looked over to where the four Kingdom-hired Awakeners were standing at the far back wall, "we would like one of you to act as an unbiased party and examine these Demon Corpses, find out whether or not they are Demon Scouts."
Lancet gave Astensia a look and she smiled at him as if to say "Well done." From the very serious reaction, they knew that there was no way the Council Members or the Sovereigns would doubt them.
The role of Demon Scouts during Demon Break was to personally infiltrate uncorrupted areas of the town or city they were trying to claim, the return with information such as the type of defense put up by the humans, the number of humans, the best routes to take and so on.
They also hunted and killed human Scouts who tried to do the same thing on their end for humans.
The point of this was that both the human and Demon Scouts were pulled back when the truce was struck as there was basically no need for them. So if these were Demon Scouts then it was really solid proof that the Demon Break was never stopped.
The Second World lied to the humans. And Lancet and his Heroines would be vindicated.
Malakai was the one who stepped forward. He marched past Lancet and the women, his Berserker build stomping fearlessly towards the red masses of flesh lay.
He squatted, resting one knee, and fully grabbed one by the head, fingers gripping into its ugly flesh. He pulled it up until its hideous face was at the same angle as his.
Malakai inspected it, shifting the chin then raising the head to look at its neck. He dropped it — slump — then grabbed the second, did the same thing, grabbed the last which had been totally decimated and ruined by Spectra.
He looked up at her, somehow knowing this was her handiwork.
Spectra looked down at him. "What?" she asked with a one-shoulder shrug.
"I did not expect you to treat your ’children’ in such a manner," he said with his rough voice.
Spectra pouted mindlessly. "What can I say? Sometimes mommy can get really really angry."
Malakai, the strong muscular hulk of a man, suddenly realized he was looking up at her, past her thighs and her arms folded underneath her breasts. The teasing smile on her face caught him off and he got redcheeked.
Realizing, he quickly looked away, clearing his throat as he got up to his feet.
The entire Council Hall fell silent, words through the conduit stopped. All eyes were directed on the Berserker as he turned to regard them, waiting for his conclusion.
Malakai parted his rough lips. "After my inspection, Great Council and your Majesties, I have found that they are correct."
Gasps came again.
"These three Demon Corpses undeniably belong to...
Although they all knew what was coming, they listened intently.
"...Demon Scouts."
Murmurs rose once more. With the traffic in the mental conduit, the Council decided to speak to each other outright, shocked and infuriated by the actions of the Demons. The Sovereigns looked at each other, understanding the implications of this. Obel recorded what just happened with a grim look on his face. And Verdrak glared at Lancet with pure hate.
Lancet looked at his Heroines and they shared a victorious smile.
