Chapter 187: Execution of the Revenant

Dawn broke across the Floating Forest in shades of gray and gold.

Lin Tian rose from the hollow flower, his body humming with power that was not quite his own. The Sovereign’s Wrath sat in his dantian like a coiled star, dense and patient and waiting.

Su Lan stretched beside him, her flames flickering with renewed vitality. Xueya’s frost had deepened to a crystalline shimmer that caught the morning light.

Lu Cang stood at the entrance, his spear ready.

"The Resonating Spike is still pulsing," he said. "The forest is dying faster now."

Lin Tian nodded once, slow and deliberate, his gaze lifting toward the canopy where the Resonating Spike’s violet pulse bled through the leaves like a second, sickly dawn.

Time to end this.

He stepped forward, and the others fell in around him without a word needing to be spoken.

They climbed, moving through the dying forest with purpose, the Heart-Tree’s great limbs groaning beneath them as the Weave unravelled with every passing moment.

The Heart-Tree’s branches shifted beneath their feet, the Weave growing more chaotic with every step. Void-Ghouls swarmed from the shadows, their forms twisted and wrong, but the group cut through them without slowing.

Su Lan’s flames carved a path. Xueya’s frost froze the stragglers solid. Yue Chan’s silks bound the ones that tried to flank. Yan Jiao’s earth-shattering strikes crushed the ones that got too close. Linle’s vines guided their feet when the branches tried to throw them off.

And Lin Tian walked at the center, his Domain extended, his senses tracking every pulse of the Resonating Spike above them.

It was close now.

The Apex loomed overhead, a crown of twisted branches wrapped around a pulsing violet crystal. The Resonating Spike throbbed like a diseased heart, sending waves of corruption through the forest with every beat.

And standing before it, bathed in that sickly light, was Mu Chen.

Or what had been Mu Chen.

The Void Revenant’s body had fused with the Spike, its flesh stretched and warped, its eyes burning with twin violet flames. Entropic Glacial Aura radiated from its form, freezing the air around it into crystalline shards that hovered like a halo of thorns.

"Lin Tian."

The voice was Mu Chen’s, but hollow. Echoing. As if something else spoke through him now.

"You should have remained in the flower," the Revenant said, its voice rolling out across the Apex like wind through a frozen tomb. Mu Chen’s mouth shaped the words, but the cadence was wrong — too slow, too resonant, as though the syllables were being dragged up from somewhere far deeper than any human throat could reach.

"You were so close to peace. So close to an ending."

Lin Tian stepped forward, boots finding purchase on the gnarled root-work of the Apex floor. Behind him he could feel the others — their warmth, their breath, the subtle hum of their Qi pressing against the edges of his Domain like hands braced against a door.

"I’m here to finish what I started," he said.

The Revenant’s expression did not change. The violet flames behind Mu Chen’s eyes simply burned a little brighter, and then the laugh came — a sound like a frozen lake splitting down its centre, deep and percussive and completely without warmth.

The crystalline shards hovering in the Entropic Glacial Aura trembled with it.

"You cannot kill what has already died," it said.

Lin Tian felt his Domain respond before he consciously commanded it — stretching outward, pressing against the corruption, mapping every filament of tainted Qi radiating from the Spike above.

He fixed his gaze on the burning violet eyes, on the hollow ruin of a face he had once known.

"Watch me."

****

The battle began without warning.

Mu Chen’s Entropic Glacial Aura exploded outward, freezing everything in a hundred-meter radius. The branches beneath Lin Tian’s feet turned to brittle ice, cracking under his weight.

But Lin Tian didn’t fall.

His Ice Flame Qi responded, melting the frost before it could take hold. The Sovereign’s Wrath stirred in his dantian, hungry for release.

Not yet.

Su Lan launched a wave of golden-white fire at the Revenant. The flames struck Mu Chen’s aura and sizzled, but didn’t penetrate.

"The corruption is too dense," she called out. "I can’t burn through it."

Xueya’s frost arrows followed, each one aimed at the Spike itself. They shattered against the violet crystal, leaving only hairline cracks.

"It’s protected," she said. "The Spike is shielding him."

Lin Tian studied the battlefield.

Mu Chen was no longer fighting alone. The Resonating Spike fed him power, regenerating his aura faster than they could damage it. Every strike they landed healed in seconds.

I need to sever the connection.

He reached out through his bonds, feeling the Link Pentagon’s resonance. Xueya’s frost. Su Lan’s fire. Yue Chan’s silk. Yan Jiao’s earth. Linle’s wood.

And at the center, his own Chaos-Harmony Vessel, holding them all together.

"I need a clear shot," he said. "Buy me time."

The group moved without hesitation.

Su Lan’s flames erupted into a wall of fire, separating Mu Chen from the Spike. Xueya’s frost formed a cage around the Revenant, slowing its movements. Yue Chan’s silks bound its limbs. Yan Jiao’s earth spikes rose from the branches, pinning it in place. Linle’s vines wrapped around the Spike itself, pulling it away from Mu Chen’s body.

For a single, precious moment, the Revenant was isolated.

Lin Tian moved.

He stepped forward, his Domain contracting around him like a second skin. The Sovereign’s Wrath uncoiled in his dantian, rising through his meridians like a tide of pure white light.

Mu Chen’s violet eyes widened.

"What—"

Lin Tian raised his hand.

The beam erupted.

It was not fire. Not ice. Not any element the world had names for.

It was pure annihilation energy, white and blinding, a pillar of absolute nothing that erased everything it touched.

Spatial defenses? Meaningless. The beam ignored them, cutting through the fabric of reality itself.

Mu Chen’s Entropic Aura? Dissolved like morning mist.

The Revenant tried to dodge, but the beam followed, tracking its movements with perfect precision.

"No! This is not—the Void Monarch promised—I was supposed to—"

Lin Tian’s voice was flat.

"The Void Monarch lied to you."

The beam struck.

Mu Chen’s body began to dissolve, but Lin Tian didn’t stop there. He pushed deeper, reaching into the Revenant’s soul, finding the threads of Void influence that had corrupted it.

This is the part he doesn’t understand.

He didn’t just kill Mu Chen.

He unmoved him.

The concept was simple, but impossible for anyone without the Sovereign’s Wrath. Lin Tian reached back through time, finding the moment the Void Monarch had first touched Mu Chen’s soul. He grabbed that thread and pulled.

The Void influence unraveled.

Mu Chen’s soul was not destroyed. It was freed.

The Revenant’s violet eyes flickered, and for a single heartbeat, they were human again.

"Lin Tian..."

The voice was Mu Chen’s. Real. Terrified.

"I’m sorry."

Then the light consumed him.

****

The beam faded.

Where Mu Chen had stood, there was nothing. No ash. No residue. No trace that he had ever existed.

But the Resonating Spike remained.

It pulsed once, twice, then began to crack.

"The Anchor," Lin Tian said. "Now."

The group moved as one.

Xueya’s frost targeted the base. Su Lan’s fire struck the top. Yue Chan’s silks wrapped around the middle. Yan Jiao’s earth weakened the foundation. Linle’s vines pulled from every direction.

And Lin Tian’s Sovereign’s Wrath struck the center.

The Spike shattered.

Violet light exploded outward, and the Void Anchor embedded beneath the Heart-Tree’s roots began to rise. It was massive — a pillar of obsidian and violet crystal, pulsing with corrupted energy.

Lin Tian grabbed it.

The Anchor resisted, sending waves of Void energy through his arm. His skin began to blacken, his meridians screaming in protest.

But the Sovereign’s Wrath responded.

The pure white energy surged through him, burning away the corruption, purifying the Anchor from the inside out.

The obsidian cracked. The violet crystal shattered.

And the Anchor dissolved into nothing.

The effect was immediate.

A pulse of green light spread from the Heart-Tree’s roots, racing through the forest in every direction. The branches that had been blackened and twisted began to heal. The leaves that had withered grew back. The air that had been thick with corruption cleared.

A third of the forest.

The System’s notification blazed across Lin Tian’s vision.

The power surged through him, hot and cold and everything in between. His cultivation base expanded, his meridians strengthening, his Domain deepening.

But Lin Tian barely noticed.

He was staring at the healed forest, at the green light spreading through the branches, at the life returning to the Heart-Tree.

This is what we’re fighting for.

Su Lan’s hand found his shoulder. Xueya’s frost brushed against his Domain.

"It’s done," Su Lan said.

Lin Tian shook his head.

"It’s just the beginning."

He turned to face the group. Lu Cang was leaning on his spear, exhausted but alive. Yue Chan’s silks were torn but intact. Yan Jiao’s earth had returned to the soil. Linle’s vines were glowing with renewed vitality.

"The Void Monarch will know we’re coming," Lin Tian said. "And it will send everything it has to stop us."

He looked at the horizon, where the Canopy That Never Falls stretched into the distance.

"But we’re not stopping."

The forest pulsed with green light, and somewhere in the distance, the second Void Anchor waited.

Lin Tian smiled.

"Let’s go hunting."
