Chapter 194: Mira
Dawn broke grey and heavy over the salt-stained coast.
The meditation had worked. Enough. He’d found water’s rhythm—pressure and current like breath. His domain could stretch into the ocean, strained but functional.
He stood and walked to the water’s edge.
The others were already awake, packing their supplies. Xueya came to stand beside him, her shoulder brushing his.
"Did you figure it out?"
"Enough," Lin Tian said. "I can extend the domain underwater. It won’t be as strong as on land, but it’ll work."
"How long will it hold?"
"Long enough to get us to the Trenches. After that, I’ll adapt on the way."
Xueya nodded. She didn’t push for more. That was one of the things he appreciated about her. She knew when to ask questions and when to trust.
Su Lan approached with the others. "We’re ready."
Lin Tian looked at the ocean one more time. The grey waves rolled endlessly, hiding whatever waited beneath.
"Let’s go."
The water was cold.
Lin Tian had expected that. What he hadn’t expected was the weight, the way the ocean pressed against him from every direction like a living thing trying to squeeze the breath from his lungs.
He pushed his domain outward, forcing it to adapt to the new environment. The Ice Flame Qi flickered, unstable, but held.
Each companion adapted differently: Xueya thrived, Su Lan fought the water’s chill, Yue Chan cocooned herself in silk, Yan Jiao’s flames sputtered but held.
Lu Cang stayed at the rear, spear ready, his eyes scanning the darkness.
Linle moved through the water like she was born in it, her Wood-aligned qi flowing in harmony with the currents.
They descended.
The light faded quickly, the grey sky above becoming a dim memory. Darkness swallowed them, broken only by the faint glow of their cultivation auras.
Lin Tian kept his senses open, feeling for threats, for movement, for anything that didn’t belong.
The Trenches of Silence loomed ahead, a massive crack in the ocean floor that plunged into absolute blackness.
"Stay close," Lin Tian said through the Link. "We don’t know what’s down there."
They descended into the Trench.
The walls were jagged, covered in strange coral that pulsed with bioluminescent light. Fish with translucent bodies darted past, their skeletons visible through their skin.
Lin Tian felt it before he saw it.
A presence. Massive. Moving.
Something was swimming toward them.
"Get ready," he said.
The water around them began to vibrate. A low hum that built into a thrumming pressure, pressing against his domain, testing its edges.
Then the attack came.
A jet of water, compressed to the density of steel, shot through the darkness. It struck the wall beside Lin Tian, carving a trench through the coral.
Lin Tian twisted, avoiding the second jet. Xueya raised a wall of ice, deflecting a third. Su Lan’s flames flared, vaporizing water around her.
"Who’s there?" Lin Tian called out, his voice carried by his qi.
The answer was a burst of sonic vibrations.
The pressure hit him like a physical blow, rattling his bones, scrambling his senses. His domain flickered, nearly collapsing.
Through the chaos, he saw her.
A Naga. But not like any Naga he had ever seen.
Her upper body was humanoid, silver-blue scales scattering light like stars. Her dark hair floated like ink. Her storm-grey eyes burned with fury—and something broken.
Her lower body was a long, powerful serpent’s tail, covered in the same silver-blue scales. She moved through the water with impossible grace, every motion fluid and deadly.
And her mouth was open, but no sound came out.
The vibrations weren’t coming from her voice. They were coming from a growth on her throat, a pulsing, black tumor that throbbed with Void energy.
She can’t speak , Lin Tian realized. The parasite stole her voice.
She raised her hands, and the water around her began to spin, forming a vortex of compressed pressure.
Lin Tian held up his hands, palms open. "We’re not your enemies!"
She didn’t stop. The vortex grew.
"Wait!" Yan Jiao called out. "We’re here to fight the Void!"
The Naga’s eyes flickered. For a moment, there was hesitation. Doubt.
Then the parasite on her throat pulsed, and her eyes went cold again.
She attacked.
The vortex shot toward them, a spiraling drill of compressed water that could punch through stone. Lin Tian threw up his domain, reinforcing it with Ice Flame Qi.
The impact sent him tumbling backward, his domain cracking under the pressure.
She’s strong , he thought. Too strong to fight in her own element.
Xueya moved to flank her, ice forming around her hands. Su Lan prepared a fire blast, the heat causing the water around her to boil.
"Don’t kill her!" Lin Tian shouted. "She’s not in control!"
The Naga’s eyes widened at his words. The parasite pulsed again, and she doubled over, her hands clutching her throat.
The attack stopped.
Lin Tian swam toward her, slowly, carefully. "I can help you. I can remove that thing."
She looked at him, her storm-cloud eyes filled with pain and suspicion.
The System pulsed.
[Candidate 6 Detected. Special Class: Siren. Compatibility 94%. Condition: Spiritual Muteness.]
[Warning: Host is bonded to a Void Parasite. Removal recommended for bond initiation.]
A Siren. A being whose voice was supposed to be her greatest weapon, her greatest gift. And the Void had stolen it from her.
"Let me help you," Lin Tian said again. "Please."
She stared at him for a long moment. The parasite throbbed, trying to assert control, but she fought it. Her hands trembled.
Then, slowly, she nodded.
Lin Tian approached her carefully, his domain extended to create a bubble of breathable air around them. The others formed a perimeter, watching for threats.
"What’s your name?" he asked.
She pointed at her throat, then made a gesture in the water. A symbol. A name.
Mira.
"Mira," Lin Tian said. "I’m Lin Tian. I’m going to remove that parasite. It’s going to hurt."
She nodded again, her jaw tight.
Lin Tian reached out, his hand hovering over the black tumor on her throat. He could feel the Void energy pulsing within it, a dark heartbeat that didn’t belong.
This is going to be delicate.
He channeled Ice Flame Qi into his fingertips, focusing it into a razor-thin blade of energy. Carefully, he began to cut.
The parasite screamed.
Not audibly. Psychically. A wave of mental noise that crashed against Lin Tian’s mind, trying to force him back. Mira convulsed, her eyes rolling back.
"Hold her!" Lin Tian shouted.
Su Lan and Xueya grabbed Mira’s arms, holding her steady. Yue Chan wrapped silk around her tail, anchoring her.
Lin Tian pushed deeper.
The parasite was deeply embedded, its tendrils wrapped around Mira’s vocal cords, her throat, her very essence. Removing it would be like pulling a weed with roots that had grown through concrete.
But he had done this before. With Yan Jiao. With Linle.
He understood the process now.
He sent his qi into the parasite, flooding it with Ice Flame energy. The Void hated balance, hated the harmony of ice and fire working together. It writhed, trying to escape.
Lin Tian didn’t let it.
He pulled.
The parasite came free with a wet, tearing sound, its tendrils ripping from Mira’s throat. Black ichor bled into the water, dissipating in the current.
Mira gasped.
The sound that came out was raw, broken, barely a whisper. But it was a sound. Her own sound.
She touched her throat, her eyes wide.
"I can... I can speak?" Her voice was hoarse, cracking on every syllable. But it was there.
"For the first time in years," Lin Tian said.
Mira looked at him, and the fury in her eyes was gone. Replaced by something else. Gratitude. Confusion. And a deep, aching vulnerability.
"Why?" she asked. "Why help me?"
"Because you’re not my enemy," Lin Tian said. "And because I need your help."
"The Trenches," she said, her voice strengthening. "You came for the Fragment."
"Yes."
"It’s guarded. The Void Monarch has placed shadows there, things that should not exist." She paused. "I was trying to reach it myself. To destroy it. To stop the corruption."
"Then we have the same goal."
Mira looked at the others, at the bonds that connected them, visible to her Siren senses as threads of light.
"You have a bond network," she said. "A strong one. I’ve never seen anything like it."
"It’s how I fight the Void," Lin Tian said. "Together, we’re stronger than any shadow."
Mira was silent for a long moment. Then she extended her hand.
"Then together we go."
Lin Tian took her hand.
The System pulsed.
[Candidate 6: Mira. Bond Initiation Pending.]
[Warning: Siren bond requires vocal resonance to complete.]
[Mira’s voice is damaged. Recovery time: Unknown.]
There was still a problem. Her voice wasn’t fully healed. The bond would have to wait.
But she was with them. And that was enough.
For now.
Mira led them deeper, her knowledge of the Trench invaluable—guiding them past ambushes and through passages they’d never have found alone.
"How much further?" Lin Tian asked.
"The Fragment is at the bottom of the Trench," Mira said. "In a temple built by an ancient race. The shadows guard it."
"How many?"
"Enough."
Lin Tian didn’t press. He had learned that Mira spoke only when she had something worth saying. It was a trait he respected.
They descended past the ruins of an old city, its buildings crumbling and covered in coral. Statues of Naga warriors lined the streets, their faces weathered by centuries of salt and current.
"This was my home," Mira said quietly. "Before the Void came."
Lin Tian looked at the ruins, at the broken homes and shattered temples.
"I’m sorry."
"It is what it is." Her voice was flat. Controlled. "We move forward or we die."
She swam ahead, her tail cutting through the water with practiced ease.
Lin Tian followed, watching her.
A Siren without a voice. A princess without a kingdom. A warrior without a purpose.
She’s carrying a lot of pain , he thought.
But she was still fighting. Still moving forward.
That was what mattered.
Ahead, the Trench opened into a vast cavern. At its center, a temple of black stone rose from the ocean floor, its spires reaching toward the surface like the fingers of a drowned god.
"The Temple of the Deep," Mira said. "The Fragment is inside."
"And the shadows?"
She pointed.
At the temple’s entrance, shapes moved in the darkness. Dozens of them. Maybe more.
"The Void Monarch’s children," Mira said. "They’ve been waiting for someone to come."
"Then let’s not keep them waiting."
Lin Tian drew his sword.
The fight was about to begin.
