Diary of a Criminal Investigator

Chapter 756: An Unexpected Discovery at the Crime Scene

The door to the crime scene wasn’t locked, and there was police tape outside.

Everything in the room remained as it was after Qin Weiwei’s murder.

Generally, houses where murders have occurred aren’t easy to sell.

And they can only be sold after the case is solved.

Qin Weiwei’s parents arrived in Haizhou City last night, and Sun Biao is handling their case.

We haven’t let them into the house yet.

"Captain Lu, how do you think the killer left?"

How did they leave?

Standing next to the sofa, Lu Chuan carefully observed every corner of the room.

He was perplexed, too.

How did the killer leave?

A familiar face, a male, who could come to the victim’s home in the middle of the night...

Motive for murder...

Why kill?

Based on current investigation results, Qin Weiwei was well-liked at the advertising company.

According to her colleagues, Qin Weiwei had no conflicts with anyone at work.

And she was quite beautiful, with many admirers.

Love turning to hate?

This case gave Lu Chuan a headache.

He felt clueless.

Turning around, just as Lu Chuan was about to leave, his gaze fixed suddenly.

Qin Weiwei had only recently purchased the apartment, and it was completely renovated.

The TV was wall-mounted, with a suspended cabinet below it.

Lu Chuan’s attention was drawn to a blinking blue light inside the cabinet.

Upon opening the cabinet, it was the TV set-top box that was blinking.

Lu Chuan recognized this type of set-top box, which combined both TV and internet signals.

It was launched by the cable company, a network television all-in-one.

Many households now use such set-top boxes.

Because it’s convenient.

Previously, watching TV required a set-top box, involving cables and connections.

The internet also needed cabling, routers, and modems for connection.

One setup led to a pile of boxes and wires everywhere.

This set-top box made things much better.

Both internet and TV signals were combined, and the speed was comparable to fiber optics.

Lu Chuan’s interest wasn’t in the set-top box itself.

But rather in what was inside it.

"Old Gao, bring me a laptop from the office."

Half an hour later.

"Captain Lu... you know how to do this?"

Gao Wenxiang looked at the streams of code on the computer screen, bewildered.

Is this hacking?

Lu Chuan shook his head, "Just a little trick, creating a program, you could do it too."

Gao Wenxiang expressed doubt about his ability to do so.

What Lu Chuan intended to do was simple: extract all mobile devices that had connected to the set-top box.

Since the killer could be a familiar person to Qin Weiwei, might he have connected to her home WiFi?

Of course, this was just a possibility.

Lu Chuan was just checking casually.

But upon checking, he discovered something significant.

Because right now, there was actually a mobile device still connected to Qin Weiwei’s home WiFi.

The person was dead, yet someone was still accessing the network?

"Which neighbors are at home?"

For the WiFi to be connected, the distance must be close.

Moreover, to connect through walls, it had to be the neighbors across, or those above or below.

It couldn’t be someone further away.

Gao Wenxiang had no idea who was home.

Lu Chuan set down the laptop and walked out directly.

Knock knock.

Lu Chuan knocked on the door across the hall.

"Coming, coming."

Dong Jun opened the door and, upon seeing Lu Chuan, recognized him.

"Officer, hello, is there anything else?"

Lu Chuan glanced at him, focusing on his phone.

"Not at work?"

Dong Jun shook his head, "I’m in interior design, recently not much work, resting at home. Do you want to know more about the situation?"

Lu Chuan nodded, "Yes, the events of that night, I want to gather some more details."

"No problem, please come in."

Dong Jun’s apartment had the same layout as Qin Weiwei’s across.

And it seemed to be recently renovated as well, neat and bright.

"Mr. Dong, I see the place across seems to be newly renovated as well, the style is quite similar to your home."

Dong Jun served Lu Chuan and Gao Wenxiang some water, "That’s right, the work at Qin’s place was done by me."

"What a pity... sigh..."

Dong Jun sighed deeply.

"Captain Lu, please have some tea."

Only after an introduction by Gao Wenxiang, did Dong Jun realize that this was the captain of the Criminal Investigation Team.

"Were you familiar with Qin Weiwei?"

"Not exactly familiar. I also bought this place recently, and when I was renovating, the other side bought an apartment too, and needed renovation."

"That’s how we got to know each other."

"I gave her a discount on the renovation price, seeing as we’re neighbors, I wasn’t looking to make much. It’s just a shame, so young..."

Dong Jun was quite chatty; whatever Lu Chuan asked, he elaborated a bit more.

"Do you live alone?"

"Divorced, no kids, just me."

Dong Jun showed no hesitation in mentioning his divorce.

Lu Chuan asked further about events on the night of the crime, and Dong Jun cooperatively answered.

"Ah, it’s my fault if I had been a bit more attentive that night, maybe Qin would have been fine..."

Dong Jun looked regretful, as if genuinely blaming himself.

"Mr. Dong, according to you, the time was around three in the morning, you were still awake at that hour?"

"Oh, I did sleep, but I’m a light sleeper, any noise wakes me up."

"Then did you hear anything later from across the hall?"

Dong Jun shook his head, "No, after she said she was watching TV, I didn’t think much of it."

"Maybe it was because her TV volume was too high."

TV?

Lu Chuan’s brow furrowed, who watches TV at three in the morning, and horror movies at that?

Qin Weiwei, due to health reasons, couldn’t handle intense emotions.

Watching horror films at midnight, isn’t that tempting fate?

The questioning of Dong Jun didn’t last long.

Lu Chuan then visited the neighbors upstairs and downstairs.

The upstairs neighbor was an elderly person in their seventies, while the downstairs occupants were out at work.

"Bring the victim’s home TV and internet device back, also bring the TV."

"Got it!"

Gao Wenxiang called for a few more people to take these items back to the Criminal Investigation Team.

Lu Chuan spent more than three hours meticulously examining the two items.

PM.

Conference room.

"Captain Lu, Zheng Gaoxue was temporarily released."

The 24-hour mark was reached, and without direct evidence linking him to the crime, he had to be released.

Of course, this was also Lu Chuan’s decision.

Lu Chuan nodded, "Chen Jiang, the matter I asked you to handle this afternoon, how is the investigation going?"

Chen Jiang had his subordinate turn on the projector, "We have some leads."

"Dong Jun, 38 years old, divorced, works in renovation, owns a small renovation company."

"He’s from Haizhou City, came from Tianzhou City 10 years ago to develop his career, with quite complex social connections."

Chen Jiang was reporting on the background of Dong Jun, the neighbor across from Qin Weiwei.

Upon returning from the crime scene, Lu Chuan had assigned Chen Jiang to conduct this investigation.
