Chapter 728 - 645: Investigation? Sabotage?

Feng Mu paused for a moment, displaying just the right amount of confusion and concern on his face:

"I heard some security guards died at the entrance. Is Madam okay?"

Hou Wendong’s gaze lingered on Feng Mu’s face for two seconds, pondering for a moment before lowering his voice:

"Madam Li is fine, you don’t need to worry. Mainly, a Night Watcher died inside, and..."

He trailed off vaguely, then changed the subject, lowering his voice even more:

"In short, if you were smart, you shouldn’t have come to Jade Garden tonight. If you want to leave now, there’s still time. I can take you out again."

Perhaps considering that Feng Mu had indirectly saved him, making him half a life-saver, he gave this special hint.

Feng Mu’s face showed an indistinct look of surprise, his pupils slightly contracting:

"Secretary Hou, do you mean that Madam Li is involved in this incident?"

Hou Wendong didn’t mean that. Seeing that Feng Mu didn’t understand, he no longer persuaded him. With his status, giving a hint was already considered as "repaying kindness."

He sighed and said:

"If someone died at your doorstep, can you guarantee that not a drop of filthy blood will splatter into your yard? Ultimately... it’s too close!"

It seemed like he was talking about Li Hanyu, but wasn’t he also referring to himself?

He, too, felt a creeping unease in his heart, as if he could sense the brewing storm on the verge of breaking.

After finishing his sentence, Hou Wendong tightly pursed his lips, walking ahead with a gloomy expression.

Feng Mu hesitated for a moment, then lowered his head and quickly caught up, his voice carrying a nearly stubborn "honesty," muttering:

"Secretary Hou, don’t laugh. I, Feng Mu, don’t understand these complex principles. I only know that Prison Director Qian has been kind to me. Prison Director Qian has not awoken yet, and if his mother has any issues, I cannot stand by and watch.

I, Feng Mu, know that I am not a good person, but I understand the principle of repaying kindness."

[Deceiver’s Glasses] combined with [Proof of Undying Loyalty lv3] and Feng Mu’s own acting skills made every word he uttered highly convincing.

Hou Wendong, who was walking in front, subtly paused in his breathing. He neither responded nor looked back.

Feng Mu’s image in his mind became increasingly vivid—a dangerous person, a smart person, and furthermore, a loyal person.

Feng Mu stopped speaking as well, slightly trailing behind and following in silence.

Liu Yi and Song Ping’an silently exchanged a glance, their gazes firm as iron, their steps steady as they followed closely behind.

The road beneath their feet seemed to elongate, stretched by the oppressive night.

Feng Mu followed Hou Wendong for a while before passing by the special commissioner’s villa.

The barricade around this villa was set tighter and wider than at the entrance, the yellow-black tape whistling in the night wind.

The figures at the entrance were many, the atmosphere deadly cold.

Several uniformed constables, in pairs, were carrying stretchers covered with white cloth from the broken villa doors, neatly arranging them on the lawn in front.

The white cloth outlined rigid human shapes, some places stained by dark liquid which under the light appeared dark brown, occasionally revealing a pale hand or a strand of disheveled hair.

An Executive Government official in a dark uniform similar to one by the entrance was pacing back and forth in front of the villa.

His expression exceedingly complex, half shrouded in gloom, eyebrows tightly knit; the other half... tensely relieved.

This contradictory emotion twisted upon his face, making every turn he made appear particularly weighty.

He would occasionally stop to mutter hoarsely to the stretchers being carried out.

Hou Wendong suddenly halted, gesturing for Feng Mu and his companions to wait where they were.

He quickly approached the official, whispering a few words.

Soon, Hou Wendong returned, his grim demeanor somewhat lightened, but the heaviness between his brows had not dissipated.

"Let’s go."

Hou Wendong didn’t explain much to Feng Mu, leading the three towards the next villa.

Feng Mu could roughly guess Hou Wendong’s state of mind.

Not finding the special commissioner’s body within the villa eased Hou Wendong’s tension slightly.

Feng Mu squinted, kindly refraining from bursting Hou Wendong’s bubble.

Liu Yi and Song Ping’an observed silently, noticing the villa’s grim situation, eyeing the bodies shrouded in white cloth, the cracked pavement, and a dark pool of blood under the streetlamp.

Feng Mu’s gaze swept over the pavement, also stopping at the pool of blood under the streetlamp.

The pool of blood was as black as ink, reflecting an eerie gleam under the light.

He didn’t recall such a large pool of blood here when he left.

Whose blood is it?

Feng Mu’s thoughts paused slightly, but Hou Wendong had already pushed open Li Hanyu’s villa’s door, and he had no choice but to avert his gaze and follow inside.

The villa was brightly lit, various chandeliers casting light to illuminate the entire place as if it were daylight.

On the expensive leather sofa at the center of the living room sat several Executive Government officials in dark uniforms, possibly having arrived with Mr. Wang or later on their own.

Unlike the official outside, pacing back and forth, they sat upright and composed, conversing in subdued tones.

Upon seeing Feng Mu and the others enter, their conversations ceased abruptly.

Their gaze lingered on Feng Mu briefly before indifferently shifting away, as if he were only air.
