Adventures of the last Wild Dragon

Chapter 332: Turning Point

As Violet hovered in the air above the area of cleared ground around the city she carefully observed the battlefield that lay before her.

She had understood that it would be a fought battle for the city of Syan, she had however, underestimated exactly how many soldiers Eldor would be willing to commit to this.

The amount of people spread out before her was truly intimidating, even when she knew that only a couple of them had any true chance of harming her.

But then her gaze was drawn up into the sky. Her eyes narrowed as she quickly identified the battered and bloody forms of Rhyana and Vithrax as they were half surrounded by over 20 unknown dragons, each of which had a human rider atop their back.

Her mind instantly snapped back to the red dragon she fought back at Somantis, of the slave bond that had so entrapped it, moulded it into the perfect mindless killing machine.

Anger flaired within her at the sight of more of her kin being treated as such, she instantly knew where she would first be going during this battle.

But first she had an important matter to attend to.

Her focus turned back to the army as a whole. It had remained stoically silent after her ultimatum, the entire battlefield in fact had remained in a stunned silence over her arrival.

She waited several more seconds, flinching slightly when she felt the heated gaze of a particularly powerful human sovereign lock onto her.

She felt the bloodlust within that gaze and knew what she had to do almost instantly.

Her voice spread out again, briefly touching every mind across the battlefield and city as a whole.

"I see your decision has been made for you all then. So be it." Then she cut off every human from Eldor and spoke only to the beasts that had followed her. "We attack. Only target the humans, do not target the defenders or I shall kill you myself."

Her presence surged as she once more roared her defiance whilst her draconic aura flaired to encompass a vast amount of the entire battlefield at once.

The defenders and beasts felt a surge of strength whilst the Eldor soldiers felt a diminishing of their own power in response.

Then the beasts charged and the war resumed.

The human general with the bloody ribbons floating around him flashed forwards with terrifying speed, and to Violet’s horror she noted that he was flying directly towards her.

She attempted to flap her wings, yet the man was simply too fast. But she was not alone.

When the man was only a hundred meteres away from her a massive head lashed out at lightning speeds to swollen the man whole.

Violet blinked in surprise, wondering if that was it, then she cursed herself for jinxing it as the massive hydra head that bit him exploded in a mist of fleshy chunks and blood.

The man was left floating there with a feral grin on his face as he turned his attention towards the bubbling neck stump that was already splitting as two new heads grew back with astonishing speed.

The Hydra roared a challenge, it was an unsettling sound, an amalgamation of dozens upon dozens of heads all making the same sound but at slightly different tones and intonations. As if a choir of beasts all roared in challenge at once.

The nearby soldiers and beasts all flinched away at the sound, along with the explosion of the beasts domain as the hydra faced off against the human general.

One of the many heads glanced back at Violet and gave her a small nod before it too turned back around to face the man befor it.

Then utter violence exploded.

A dozen heads lashed out, each one aiming either at the man or around him. Meanwhile the swordsman lashed out with his sword and ribbons, 3 heads were instantly severed or otherwise destroyed in an instant whilst the remaining heads narrowly missed the man as he danced between heads as big as buildings.

Domains clashed and the very air itself seemed to tremble in fear at the power being displayed.

Violet decisively decided to flee from that particular battle, knowing that she stood no change against such a foe.

Instead she turned towards her original targets, the dragons up on the air which had only now snapped out of their apparent daze.

Her eyes hardened and she flapped her powerful wings to send her rocketing upwards.

On the way she unleashed her barrage of magical attacks, hundreds of bolts and dozens of spears all materialised in an instant and shot forwards.

The dragon riders that had been targeting her allies were forced to frantically defend against the incoming projectiles. Or at least most of them did, one beast and its rider was either too slow or too stupid to understand the threat of her magics.

That one did not last long as over 20 bolts directly slammed into the rider, each bolt tearing through the man and leaving him riddled with clean wounds that punctured right through him. His pet dragon did not last much longer as around 10 spears similarly impacted the beast.

Two found the long neck the rest landing in either its body or wings. Whilst dragons did hold an intrinsic resistance to magic, that defense was held invalid when faced against her void.

The beast was skewered, then it exploded. The headless body of the dragon soon falling from the sky.

Then Violet simply repeated her actions, summoning another barrage, then another and another.

The air between her and the Eldor dragons became filled with deadly projectiles as she singlhandedly forced the entire flight of dragons back in fear.

Be it from her powerful display or she shear intimidation factor of her arriving whilst leading a sovereign Violet did not know, what she did know was that the dragons arrayed against her looked afraid.

No not just afraid, that was too simple of a description for what they seemed to be experiencing. It was as if something fundamental within them had awoken and it currently only knew abject terror.

She pondered that for a moment before a sudden flash of understanding bloomed within her as she remembered seeing something similar before now, only back then the effect was nowhere near as impactful.

Back in the dragon farm, when she had first displayed herself as a dragon and unleashed her aura. Violet had noticed that the vast majority of young dragons present had suddenly seemed to ’come alive’ for lack of a better word.

As if the malaise that dulled their minds and bound them to the kingdom that so bound them had suddenly been lifted in an instant.

Now Violet too recognised that same effect in many of the eyes of the dragons arrayed against her here.

Seeing and realising this Violet understood what she had to do. She could not indiscriminately kill these beasts that had been wronged so, it was not right, no. She would instead do what she could for them.

At least for the dragons that seemed to have regained that small spark of intellect behind their terrified eyes.

Was it a slightly foolish decision to make? Absolutely, was it the correct tactical decision? Undoubtedly no.

Yet would she do it regardless, absolutely. She was the Wild Dragon, how could she, a being that represented freedom in its more primal of ways not aid the escape of beings bound under chain?

She simply could not ignore it. No she would right this wrong.

’Well, she would at least give it her best shot.’ Violet thought as she watched the 14 dragons that had not regained that spark of intellect reorganise themselves and rush directly towards her as the weaved between her barrage of magic.

She quickly snapped a mental bridge to her allies in the air in the few moments she had left to act.

"Glad to see you all doing alright! No time to speak but I need you to not kill the dragons holding back, only kill their riders. They can be freed from the kingdom. The ones attacking me however, we won’t be able to do anything for them here I’m afraid."

She felt them attempt to respond but Violet knew that she did not have time to respond as she only had moments before the reduced flight of dragons was upon her.

She smiled viciously as her mana surged.

Runes of utter nothingness carved themselves into reality all around her.

These were new runes that she had been developing over the last week as she thought more and more about domains. She was getting so close to having one that she really needed to begin forming one of her own.

Whilst Luna held a pseudo domain with her Arctic manifestation skill. Violet currently lacked any true middle ground to forming a domain of her own.

Then she realised that she had potentially the perfect skill to be able to forge her own pseudo domain. Only it would be a true challenge to do so as she would have to manually create it.

Her runic magic skill was a truly versatile skill, able to recreate a vast number of effects, only limited by her intelligence and the time spent refining the skill.

As such she had spent most of the journey to Syan developing this pseudo domain, now it seemed like the correct time to truly test out how well her idea worked.
