How I Accidentally Built a Kingdom

Chapter 87 - Of Course He Can Fly Now

Daniel, Cat and I made our way out of the inn, everything was still pretty silent, and dark. After our night shift at the bar, and then our... other activities, and our discussions, it was just after dawn at that moment.

Which meant that the only activity in the village at that moment were the service providers moving through the village putting out the street lamps, and a few other villagers that were on their way to their jobs.

All of them however, immediately recognized Daniel, waving frantically to him with bright smiles on their faces.

"The villagers have missed you," I smiled up at him.

"Of course they did, I’m the best bartender around after all," Daniel smiled back, before realizing what he had just said. "Of course the beauty of my wives would draw a lot more customers."

I still couldn’t believe that the man truly thought the people only liked him because he was a good bartender, or just because he was a friendly person. It’s like he didn’t know just how much he had done for the village up until that point.

"Where are we going?" Cat asked, walking on the other side of Daniel, hugging his other arm, just like I was.

"Well, it’s not like I can just start fortifying the village without the chief’s permission," Daniel answered, turning to walk in the direction of Worick’s house. "We’re going to go talk to Worick first."

Little did he know that at that point he didn’t really need to ask permission to do anything, Worick would simply let him do anything he wanted. But we also knew that he wasn’t ready to know that yet.

The three of us walked arm in arm for a few more moments, until we finally reached Worick’s home.

"I hope he’s awake already," I mumbled, as I raised my hand to knock on the door.

"Well if he’s anything like most of the old people I knew on Earth, he’ll definitely be up," Daniel smiled as I knocked on the door.

A few moments later the door opened, but this time it wasn’t Worick who had opened the door, it was Janice.

"Daniel, you’re back." She smiled at us, gesturing for us to come in out of the early morning cold.

"Good morning Janice," Daniel smiled as we stepped into their home. "Yeah, for now at least, I still have some business to attend to in the human territories."

"You’re already planning on leaving again?" Worick’s voice drifted to us from the sitting room to our left.

"If everything goes according to plans, I’m leaving again today," Daniel answered as we walked over and had a seat across from Worick. "I’m just here to get your permission to make some... changes."

"What kind of changes?" Worick asked.

"I want to fortify the village against the incoming threat from the army going around conquering villages." Daniel answered.

"Oh," Worick nodded with a smile. "Sure, just let me know if there’s anything you need."

"Excellent!" Daniel smiled, although I could see a brief frown from him at how easy it was to get Worick’s permission. "I won’t really need help with the fortifications, but I do suggest that you gather up all of the refugees, and explain to them the rules you had implemented in the village lately."

"We need them to become an influx to the economy as soon as possible," Daniel continued. "Although this might sound cruel, refugees that don’t have work, or businesses tend to be a massive drain to an economy, and we need to prevent that as quickly as possible."

"I can do that," Worick smiled. "But how are we going to prevent that? I don’t think there are enough jobs available to support all of them at the moment, and with our rules about buying land, they can’t even start businesses."

"Don’t worry too much about that," Daniel smiled. "If you give me a couple of days, I’ll have the solution to help them with those funds, I just need to implement some of my plans first."

"Once everything is in place, I’ll ask Julia and Cat to come and explain everything to you," Daniel finished.

"Okay, I’ll trust you then," Worick smiled.

Daniel and Worick discussed a few more things that needed to be done in the village, and after a few minutes more we made our way back outside.

"This is going to take me all day if I have to do all of the fortifications piece by piece," Daniel muttered.

For a few moments we just stood outside Worick’s house, with Daniel in deep thought. Finally his eyes widened in realisation, and a wide grin spread across his face.

"The square is still about the center of the village, right?" Daniel asked.

"Yes," I nodded. "What’s your plan?"

"You’ll see," Daniel said, immediately starting to make his way toward the square.

Eventually we reached the completely empty village square.

"Okay," Daniel said, gently removing his arms from our embrace. "Why don’t you two have a seat, I won’t be long, or rather I can’t be too long."

"What do you mean you can’t be too long?" I asked as Cat and I sat down on one of the benches.

"Well," Daniel said, rubbing the back of his head. "Let’s just say I don’t know how much magic power this is going to use."

I was just about to ask him what he was planning, maybe even give him a few slaps if it sounded stupid, but I was interrupted by him walking to the center of the square, where he came to a stop, and closed his eyes.

I knew at that moment that I shouldn’t interrupt him, since he was clearly visualising something.

I just had not expected the results of his visualisation.

Within moments I could feel magic power pouring out of him, and not even a second later his feet slowly started to lift off the ground.

I stared at that scene with pure astonishment, slowly he drifted higher, and higher, until he eventually came to a stop dozens of feet up in the air, a massive smile plastered all over his face as he looked down at the village.

"Of course he can fly now," Cat said from next to me, her eyes just as wide as my own. "And of course this is yet another spell he likely didn’t test before using on himself."

"That... wouldn’t surprise me at all," I whispered with a smile of my own.
