Chapter 88 - Creating Ramparts
If your thinking is anything like mine, then you also probably thought ’it’s just flying, what could be so hard about it with magic?’.
You know, you just visualise that you’re flying, pour in some magic power, and woosh up you go.
Well, that was completely wrong.
Apparently even in this world, and with magic, physics still played some role.
At first I thought I could simply remove all the gravity around me with an anti-gravity field, and I would just gently float upward, which was completely wrong. The only thing that happened in that case was my feet barely lifting off the ground, and nothing else happening... oh and it also felt like no matter what I did with my body, I would achieve no results.
Then I remembered a physics lecture from high-school on Earth. Neutralising gravity alone would not suddenly make me float higher, what I actually needed to do was repel gravity, which could have some... disastrous effects if I was being a bit too... aggressive with it.
Think, shooting into the sky like a bullet with absolutely no control, then reactivating gravity fully in surprise and panic, then feeling as your head suddenly shoots through your... ahem, just know that it would not end well.
So instead what I needed to do was to repel gravity just enough for me to slowly float to the height I wanted, then stopping to repel gravity but still keeping a field around me that would neutralise gravity so I could stay in position.
At the same time I would also need to use wind magic to keep me in place, since even a light breeze could knock me off course.
So basically what I’m saying is that it was a lot easier said than done.
But of course being the magical genius that I am, once I figured out the perfect method, I succeeded on the very first try. Why wouldn’t I, like I said, I’m a magical genius.
I floated up high enough so I could have a perfect view of the entire village, and the low wall that currently surrounded it.
And like Julia said, I had a massive smile on my face.
That was out of pure joy of course, and not at all because another thing I had brought with me from Earth was my insane fear of heights, and the ’smile’ Julia saw was actually a grimace of terror I disguised as a smile.
That wasn’t the case at all.
So when I finally reached the perfect height, switched over to a simple anti-gravity spell that would keep me in place vertically, and created an air bubble around me that would keep the wind at bay, which would keep me in place horizontally, I finally looked around at the surroundings of the village, trying to visualise the fortifications I wanted to create.
However I could feel my magic power being drained slowly by the air bubble that I had to keep feeding magic power so it would stay active, at least the anti-gravity spell didn’t need to be constantly fed to stay active.
That had been another perk of null-magic I had noticed while I was programming the bank cards, as soon as a spell was linked to an object, or person, the only cost to magic power was the activation cost.
But what you should also remember is that just to reach my position at that time, I had had to cast three different spells, of which one was constantly slowly draining my magic power.
So my time had been pretty limited to stay in the air.
Once I had basically burned the sight of the entire village and its surroundings into my mind, I closed my eyes.
In my mind I visualised the wall I wanted to create, how high I wanted it to be, where I wanted the gate to be, and the distance I wanted it to be from the edge of the village at that time. Then I visualised exactly what I wanted the Earth to do to make that possible, I visualised how the foundation had to be hardened so it wouldn’t collapse, how the wall itself should be hardened and compacted to a point where it was basically concrete.
And then I poured my magic power into that visualisation.
For a moment nothing happened, except for me feeling my magic power draining at a rapid pace.
After a few moments I even started to get slightly panicked, remember if my magic power drained completely, not only would I no longer be able to hold the air bubble that was keeping me in place, but I would also most likely fall unconscious.
Now if you would like to envision what that would’ve meant, think of an unconscious man drifting around in the air like a leaf, being blown from place to place without even knowing it.
Hell I could wake up back in the human kingdom!
Luckily though, eventually I could hear the Earth rumble all around me, which was the signal for me to finally open my eyes.
The moment I did however, it felt like I had been spun around for a game of tag again.
Below me it looked like the world had suddenly started to spin faster on its axes... wait does this world actually spin on an axis?
Is it even round?
Anyway, that’s what it felt like, I had only ever felt like that once, and that was when my magic power had been dangerously close to depleted.
Immediately I lowered the power of the anti gravity field around me just enough for me to slowly start to drift downward again.
I didn’t even have time to look at the results of the single biggest elemental spell I had ever cast, and honestly at the pace my sight was darkening, I wouldn’t have been able to truly take in the greatness of my creation at that time anyway.
The moment my feet touched the ground, I canceled both the anti gravity, and the air bubble spells.
And then... well then all that awaited me was darkness, and the soft embrace of a magic powered drained sleep.
